Mindfulness

Students at George Spencer Academy will be receiving lessons in mindfulness during the Summer Term. Classes have been selected in years 7-9 and 12/13 for this opportunity. The lessons are aimed at techniques to reduce stress before exams, build confidence and making pupils generally more aware of the here and now. Two Youth Workers from Derby University are working with the school and trialling different techniques with the students. These techniques include breathing exercises, chair yoga and activities focused on using the different senses. We hope the trial will be successful and will be evaluating these lessons and the impact with the expectation that Mindfulness will become an integrated part of the Academies curriculum if the trial is succesful. If you have any questions about the trial then please contact Mr Thorpe (mthorpe@george-spencer.notts.sch.uk). If you would like further information about mindfulness then this https://www.mindful.org/what-is-mindfulness/ may be useful.

Free Workshops

We are taking part in a series of FREE workshops to support parents who have children aged between 9-19yrs.

These events will take place in central Nottingham at the lovely Antenna and include the opportunity for parents to network and join in with the Q&A session.

We offer a welcoming 'No Judgement - No Blame' service that will leave parents feeling better equipped and supported to manage the 'tricky' adolescent years.

Support for Parents

Helping your child with homework and organisation

  • Encourage your child to explain homework tasks to you. Discussing often helps to focus the mind.
  • Reward your child for successfully completing homework tasks.
  • Try to provide your child with a suitable place and the right equipment to do his/her homework.
  • Sign your child's planner each week.
  • Help with spelling punctuation and grammar.
  • Take an interest in what your child is learning about.
  • Encourage your child to read out loud to you.
  • Reading skills are essential to learning.
  • Help your child to find out information from books, Internet, etc. Be careful not to do the work for him/her!
  • Take an interest in how well he/she did in previous homeworks. Praise all praiseworthy efforts!
  • Please check that your child has completed the Organisation Sheet earlier in their planner. This will help to ensure that they have the right equipment for each school day.
